Kayakers love this relatively calm river in Georgia, especially when they reach their most favorite destination: the abandoned mine tunnel.

When you enter the river along the Castleberry Bridge, you will see an old abandoned mine less than four miles away. And surprisingly, you can actually kayak through it!

The mine tunnel was built around the 1800s. Many miners believed that there was gold on the bottom of the river, so they came up with this tunnel.

Now, after more than two centuries, the tunnel is still there and kayakers can make the most out of it in such thrilling adventures.

The tunnel has a length of about a quarter of a mile. So, it’s not that long of a distance, but it’s not short either.

However, you need to be careful once you enter inside as the do pick up a bit inside.

Also, you need to make sure to look through before entering the tunnel. If you see a tiny speck of light, the tunnel is clear. If you don’t, then that means that debris is piled up inside so you will need to move it out.

If is advisable to use a headlamp during your first on this adventure as it can get a bit scare down there in the dark.
